ASTM E84-94 - Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials
Scranton Products (Santana/Comtec/Capitol} offers a complete line of toilet compartments that meet the ASTM E84-94 criteria for Class A and Class B. Contact Scranton Products (Santana/Comtec/Capitol) for colors and availability.
Description of Test:
The ASTM E84-94 test method is intended to compare the surface flamespread and smoke developed measurements to those obtained from the tests of mineral fiber cement board and select grade red oak flooring. The results are expressed as Flame Spread Index and Smoke Developed Index.
Results:
Class A Interior Finish
Flame Spread Index 0-25, Smoke Developed Index 0-450. Includes any material classified at 25 or less on the flame spread test scale and 450 or less on the smoke developed test scale described in 6-2.1.6. Any element thereof when so tested shall not continue to propagate fire.
Class B Interior Finish
Flame Spread Index 26-75, Smoke Developed Index 0-450. Includes any material classified at 25 but not more than 76 on the flame spread test scale and 450 or less on the smoke developed test scale described in 6-2.1.6.
UL 94 Vertical Burn - Test For Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances (Class A Only)
Note that the UL 94 is a test for parts in devices and appliances. Toilet compartments do not fall into this category. However, the UL 94 vertical burn test as applied to Scranton Products (Santana/Comtec/Capitol) Class A (per ASTM E84-94) components demonstrates that our Class A components contain flame retardants throughout the thickness of the material and not just the outer surfaces. Thus, the Class A panel will self extinguish quickly when ignited.
Description of Test
The plastic test specimen is fixed in a vertical position. Surgical cotton is placed 12" below the test specimen and a flame is applied to the lower end of the test specimen for two successive ten second intervals.
Results
Scranton Products (Santana/Comtec/Capitol) Class A toilet compartments meet the requirements of 94V-0. A material classed 94V-0 shall (summarized):
- Not have any specimens that burn with flaming combustion for more than 10 seconds.
- Not have a total flaming combustion time exceeding 50 seconds.
- Not have any specimens that burn with flaming or glowing combustion up to the holding clamp.
- Not have any specimens that drip flaming particles that ignite the surgical cotton.
- Not have any specimens with glowing combustion that persists for more than 30 seconds after the second removal of the test flame.
